Do glasses protect us against blue light?

As technology advances in our daily lives, we begin to surround ourselves with more and more devices emitting so-called blue light. But over time, studies have found that its action has harmful effects on eye function. Therefore, more and more ophthalmologists recommend the use of glasses that filter this light from the screens and act as a filter against its effects.

Unlike regular glasses, blue light filter glasses have specially made lenses designed to either block or filter light that falls into the blue light range. Its action is expressed in direct damage to the retina. It also reduces the fatigue that is often felt after a long working day spent in front of computer screens or other devices such as a telephone, for example. So for a longer time, the focus also remains better.

But regardless of all the benefits, experts still recommend taking regular breaks – for example, 10 minutes for every hour spent in front of the screen.

Blue light can also affect our sleep. Therefore, using a phone or other device that emits blue light right before bed can exacerbate existing or trigger new sleep problems.

Prolonged exposure to light, especially from the blue spectrum, can worsen chronic headache symptoms or trigger migraine attacks. With the regular use of glasses with appropriate protection of the rays of this spectrum, the possibility of headache manifestations is significantly reduced.

An interesting fact is that while the cornea and the lens of the eye have the ability to deal with harmful UV light, they do not have the function of blocking the action of the rays of the blue spectrum, as its use has been applied in recent years in various devices, while several millions of evolutions have not met us with such type of rays against which to develop a defense.

When exposed to blue light for a long time, the retina shows changes reminiscent of those associated with age – such as in senile macular degeneration, a leading cause of blindness.

In addition to macular degeneration, frequent and prolonged exposure to blue light can lead to the development of cataracts.
